Sailing without Limits

A day on the Glenmore Reservoir was the highlight of month, with CPAA’s special sailing day on Saturday, July 18th, 2009 at the Disabled Sailing Association of Alberta. Members with mobility challenges and in wheelchairs were able to partake in the sailing activities thanks to the experience staff on hand and with the help of lift, and were placed on board the Sonar, a 23’ sailboat adapted to make the boat accessible to sailors with disabilities.

There was no free ride on ship…everyone assisted the captain with an assigned role. From controlling the main sail or the gib, members and volunteers alike worked together to ensure a smooth ride. Although experienced sailors felt there could have been more wind to make the day memorable, some of us less experienced navigators were perfectly happy with the windless sunny day.

The day was made possible thanks to the Disabled Sailing Association of Alberta’s Community Partnership Programs, which offers agencies serving persons with disabilities the opportunity to bring their clients out to enjoy an introductory sailing experience. Events are designed to provide a "first experience" of sailing and highly regarded as a safe, fun and therapeutic experience for children and adults with mobility and learning disabilities.

Are you up for the Challenge?

The Cerebral Palsy Association in Alberta is gearing up for the 3rd annual Life without Limits Challenge and we want you to join us to create a Life without Limits for individuals affected by CP and other disabilities.

Presented by Motion Specialties & Eco Medical, the 2009 Life without Limits Challenge is being held in Calgary on Saturday, September 19th at Carburn Park and in Edmonton on Sunday, September 20th at Gold Bar Park. Registration for this event is now underway! Registration is $35 for participants 18 years and older and $20 for participants 17 years and under, and will include a nylon cinch challenge bag, long sleeved challenge shirt, BPA free water bottle, coupons, and other fun surprises!)

Log onto http://www.lifwithoutlimits.ca/ to register you or your team, or call Ulrike Thomas at 403.219.3608.

This annual fundraising event allows participants to walk, run or “wheel” (wheelchairs, adaptive bikes, rollerblades etc.) their way to the finish line. We encourage you to register early for this fun and exciting event, collect pledges and challenge others in their fundraising efforts. By registering online at http://www.lifewithoutlimits.ca/ you can create your own personalized fundraising page where you can not only email friends and family to encourage them to support you or join your team, but you can track and update your own fundraising progress, post pictures of you and your team and send messages to other participants. Prizes will be awarded for top fundraisers, as well as all participants who raise $500, $1,000 and $2,000 in pledges. Additional prize categories include best team costumes, top adult, youth and team fundraisers – just to name a few!

Draw tickets will also be awarded for your chance to win some fabulous prizes. Ways to get draw tickets include:
The more money you raise, the more tickets you receive
For each garbage bag of used clothing brought to donate
For each garbage bag of bottles brought to be recycled

As always, the event provides the opportunity for members, family, friends and coworkers to come together for a day of fun, exercise and a little friendly competition all the while helping to raise funds for CPAA. With fun ability challenges, entertainment and delicious food on hand, this is an event geared for people of all ages and abilities - where the goal is not to be the first to cross the finish line, but to participate in your own way and have a great time!

With cerebral palsy affecting 1 in 400 children born each year in Alberta, the need to reach people affected by CP and provide support services and programs becomes increasingly important. Working together with our community will allow us to continue to provide a life without limits for persons with disabilities in the province of Alberta.

Travel Stories

Planning vacation can be a daunting task even for an abled body person. I have been trying to make arrangements for my trip home to Ontario and seeing as the closest Westjet flight lands some 400 km from my hometown, I have to get creative. Many frustrations led me to think about some of our members and how they must have many more obstacles to overcome.

I want to hear about some of those. If you or someone you know has interesting vacation stories, good or bad, please send them to me: ltherrien@cpalberta.com. I would love to share some of them with the rest of our members.

Happy Travels!
